Here's What to Know if You are Considering a Backyard Fire Pit

April 10, 2020

Spring is here, and summer isn’t far away! It’s not too early to begin thinking about your next big outdoor project. You may be thinking about how great it would be to have a backyard fire pit, and we couldn’t agree more. There are some things you need to consider before you build that little piece of paradise.

Things to Think About

There are many different types of fire pits, so you will need to think about your needs and the needs of your family before you jump right into the fire pit. First, do you want your fire pit to have a permanent spot in your yard, or do you want it to be portable? Some people like portable fire pits, because they can move it to different spots in their yard. Other people want to use a fire pit as the focal point in the yard, so it will stay in one place.

A permanent fire pit needs to be made of materials that will coordinate with your home, as well as the look of your backyard. If you want a portable fire pit, fire bowls can be made of steel, copper, or iron. There are also fire tables, which incorporate fire with natural gas or propane, and an eating surface. Many people also like chimineas, which look like small chimneys. They are able to stand alone in your backyard.

After you have given some thought about permanent or movable fire pits, you need to think about whether you want your pit to use wood, natural gas or propane as a fuel source. Many people love wood fire pits, because of the smell, and the sound of wood burning. However, you will have to have firewood on hand all the time in order to use a wood fire pit. Other people like propane or natural gas, which means you don’t have to wait for the wood to catch fire and burn. Propane fire pits will have a propane tank attached. Natural gas fires require more construction because a gas line will need to be installed from your home to the fire pit.

You also need to think about seating around your fire pit. Make sure people have a place to sit close to the fire pit--but not too close. You’ll also need a little light around the fire pit, so that people can walk around easily.
