Installing an inground pool is a huge endeavor that raises a lot of questions. One of the most important and often missed considerations when installing such a pool is what to do about lighting. Here are some of the most common questions we see about pool lighting, and our answers to them.
Is it necessary? While not 100% required, there are a lot of great reasons you really should install lighting in your pool! You’ll be able to take advantage of your pool both day and night, with the beautiful ambiance of underwater lighting. You’ll also improve your pool’s safety, especially with regards to children swimming and hanging out in the pool area after dark.
Are they safe? Pool lighting, when installed correctly by professionals, are completely safe.
How many lights will I need? This will depend greatly on what kind of lighting you choose, but a good rule of thumb is a minimum of one bright light per 30 feet of pool. Two is the more popular choice.
When do pool lights have to be installed? Pool lights must be installed during the construction of your pool. Otherwise, it would take some major renovation to install them at a later time.
What are the pros and cons of various lighting options? There are a few different types of lights you can install in your pool. The most common choice is LED lighting, but fiber optics and incandescent bulbs are also available. LED lights emit no heat, can change colors and even give light shows, and will last 5-6 times as long as incandescent bulbs and fiber optics. Fiber optic lights generally have a bulb located in a dry box on top of the Long Island pool patio. This light travels through cables to fittings within the pool itself. The disadvantages of fiber optics are that they are very expensive and not particularly bright. Incandescent bulbs are what you might consider as traditional light bulbs. They can only change colors using a colored lens, and bulb life is relatively short.
How much do pool lights cost? Again, this will vary based on your choices. Full size LED pool lights usually cost between $1,000 and $1,500 installed. Smaller LEDs may cost as little as $700-$900, while fiber optics will run you from $1,300 to $1,700, and incandescent lighting typically ranges from $450 to $650.
What maintenance will need to be done? The only maintenance that will need to be carried out is bulb replacement, which can be done in a matter of minutes, and is relatively affordable. You shouldn’t worry too much about replacement; pool lighting bulbs last for many, many years!
